This week, the Northern Irish branch of the UK Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) made a technical visit to the Netherlands and especially AsfaltNu and Cargill. The intention was to understand how AsfaltNu, a leading asphalt production and R&D organization in the Netherlands, is dealing with sustainability, circularity of materials and carbon reduction programs.
AsfaltNu’s R&D Manager Mark Frunt told the guests everything about AsfaltNu and the developments surrounding sustainable asphalt and asphalt production. Koos Jol, R&D engineer at AsfaltNu, explained how the power of Anova 1817 fully breaks down the RAP agglomerations and restores the properties of the aged binder resulting in high quality asphalt. Anova 1817 high excellent performance rejuvenator is used to enable RAP contents of up to 80% in asphalt binder and surface layers including SMA. After the presentations, the guests were shown around the asphalt plant, where all activities in the production and the lab were extensively discussed and viewed.
The IAT members shared their local experiences in Ireland and discussed the technical and economic benefits of high RAP usage in the Netherlands. The visit was welcomed by all concerned and served as a knowledge transfer opportunity.
